Aviation maintenance encompasses any activity that ensures an aircraft remains structurally sound. This includes inspections, repairs, and overhauls. It involves certified mechanics who have detailed training on the procedures necessary to ensure an aircraft remains capable of safe and reliable flight. Aviation maintenance is broken down in to several categories:
  • Routine and Preventative Maintenance – Periodic repairs to keep the aircraft in good working order. (ie. changing the oil)
  • Inspections – A detailed look at the aircraft and its operational capabilities to determine if it needs repairs to remain capable of safe flight.
  • Minor Repairs or Alterations - simple or minor preservation operations and the replacement of small, standard parts, not involving complex assembly operations
  • Major Repairs or Alterations - more extensive maintenance performed in a hangar, such as adding on after market equipment.
Importance of Maintenance:
  • Safety - Thorough maintenance is paramount for the safety of passengers, crew, and the integrity of the aircraft.
  • Reliability - Regular maintenance ensures that aircraft systems and components function correctly, leading to reliable operation.
  • Cost Savings - Addressing issues early through preventive maintenance can prevent costly repairs and downtime.
  • Aircraft Value - Well-maintained aircraft retain their value better, especially with proper documentation of repairs and modifications.
Roles and Responsibilities:
  • Owner/Operator (with Pilot's cert) - Preventative maintenance
  • Certified Aircraft Mechanic - Oversee maintenance operations, ensuring compliance with regulations and standards.
  • Pilots: Conduct pre- and post-flight inspections to identify potential issues.
